The Day The World Stopped
Or, less dramatically, the day our government finally acknowledged Covid as a pandemic
December 2023
I’ve been sick all week with a nasty case of Covid.
My spouse and son had it first, but were only sick for a few days and bounced back very quickly. As per usual, I’m the last to get it, but it also hits me twice as hard.
We’re all vaccinated, thankfully, because I expect it would have been a lot worse were we not.
This had me reflecting on the past 3 — nearly four — years, and the day it all came to a crashing halt.
March 2020
We are driving out to a winter cabin for March break. The weather is relatively mild and we’re very much looking forward to a few days of board games, campfires, and even some horseback riding.
We’re listening to the radio on our way and hear news of shut-downs. The province has declared a state of emergency, and lists of non-essential services begin to grow as businesses are told to shut down or significantly reduce services.
We call the place we’re renting the cabin from, and they say we’re still allowed to come out since our family will be staying together and there aren’t other renters in the area.
That’s the good news.
Then my phone starts blowing up with email alerts.
