Social control
Did you know? The definition of socialization is,
“The adoption of the behavior patterns of the surrounding culture.”
One of the synonyms for socialization is literally “social control”.
It’s not about learning interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. Nor is it learning about differences, compromise, and mutual accommodation. It’s about conformity, fitting in.
So what about those of us who don’t easily or naturally “fit in”? And what happens when the surrounding culture is kinda shitty sometimes?
Professional advice
Many “professionals” advise against allowing Autistic children to play with other Autistic children.
Their theory is that Autistic kids should play with Neurotypical (NT) kids in order to learn social skills from them, their fear being allowing Autistic children play together will cause them to learn “poor” social skills from one another.
Wanna know a secret?
