Performative “allyship”:
Changes branding to include rainbows for 1–30 days per year, then does nothing to acknowledge the LGBTQIA2+ community the other 11 months of the year.
Ducks and covers when there is public controversy and does not stand up to bigotry and hate.
Uses visible minorities to appear inclusive, but does not make space for their voices to be heard.
Virtue signalling.
Genuine allyship:
Shows support to marginalized communities 365 days a year.
Includes and consults with LGBTQIA2+ and other marginalized communities.
Publicly stands up against hate and bigotry.
Intentionally includes and hires marginalized folks and values their lived experiences.
Makes room for marginalized people to be heard, centres LGBTQIA2+ voices instead of their own.
