Schools kill creativity
More accurately, compliance kills curiosity and creativity.
As per usual, I want to reiterate that I am approaching this conversation from a systems perspective. When I criticize public education and schools, I am not criticizing the individuals who are doing the very best they can from within a system which causes a lot of harm to a lot of people.
I am zooming out (in a manner of speaking) and looking at the systemic factors which allow this to continue, 5 days per week, 6 hours each day.
I want to focus on the policies which are largely made by people quite removed from the everyday experiences of teachers and students, yet have significant impact on their quality of learning — even their quality of life.
Why does this happen?
It’s borne out of necessity.
