Happy new year!
I’ve been on quite a roll so far this month, publishing 14 articles over the past 12 days.
For those who were still in holiday mode and might have missed something, here are my five best-performing pieces on Medium from December 10, 2022 to January 13, 2023.
5) When Autistic Inertia Impedes
Autistic Inertia: What it is and what we can do to overcome it.
Similar to ADHD Paralysis, Autistic inertia arises from executive functioning (EF) difficulties which can cause us to become both physically and mentally “stuck”; unable to move forward, start something new, or to switch to something different.
4) Can’t Versus Won’t
I wrote this piece in response to the multitude of comments I received on my articles, How Parenting Is Like Dog Training, and Do Kids Really Benefit From Learning To Tolerate Things They Don’t Like?
Knowing when to push and when to back off is a difficult balance. What we adults have to remember is that when something like this happens (seemingly) out of the blue, there is usually a reason for it, beyond they “just didn’t want to”.
Because we don’t yet know the reason doesn’t mean there isn’t a good one, it simply means we don’t understand their perspective yet.
3) Understanding Sensory Processing Disorder
SPD is defined as difficulty processing information we receive from our various senses. The two primary ways this manifests is either hypo (under) or hyper (over) sensitivity from one’s senses.

2) How Parenting is like Dog Training
I just published this article a week ago, and it’s already performing better than nearly everything else I’ve published over the past two months.
When we look at only the observable surface behaviour, we might call growing an “aggressive” behaviour and seek to punish it so the dog doesn’t growl anymore. This is exactly what we do in response to children’s perceived misbehaviours.

1) Key Similarities Between Autism and BPD
Why Autistic women tend to be misdiagnosed with personality disorders. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is described as “a mental health disorder that impacts the way you think and feel about yourself and others, causing problems functioning in everyday life.

My Book Review of The Myth of Normal
I started writing a book review for Dr. Gabor Maté’s new book, The Myth of Normal, and it turned into a three-part series. To be fair, the book is incredibly long (over 500 pages), and there was a lot of ground to cover.
If you’re interested in hearing a (mostly) balanced critical perspective, here are those three stories:
