Compliant children are not learning
If a child is worried about getting into trouble, they are focused more on following expectations than on actual learning.
That’s not to say that children whose behaviour happens to be in line with expectations because they’re having a good time and are cooperating aren’t learning.
There are very important differences between compliance and cooperation.
“Cooperation involves meeting the needs of both individuals, whereas compliance is typically fear-based and is focused on the needs and desires of the more powerful person.” — Robyn Gobbel
