Aggression Is Behavior, Not Character
The word “aggressive” describes behavior, not a person’s character
The word “aggressive” describes someone’s behaviour, it is not a personality or character trait.
Aggression is not inherent in Autistic people (nor inevitable — in anyone).
Aggression is not a natural part of “being Autistic”.
Aggressive behaviours are the result of:
Fear
Frustration
(…etc.)
This is not who we are
Aggression is a sign that something is wrong and a person needs support. It is not a sign they are a “bad” person or that aggression is an innate part of their personality.
Yes, some people are more likely than others to externalize their distress, so aggressive behaviour is more likely when they are dysregulated. The underlying causes, however, are the same.
Aggression and other concerning behaviours are communicating a need.
